An 18-year-old man from the RM of St. Clements has admitted responsibility for graffiti images that have defaced bridges, signs, businesses and residential property in Selkirk and the surrounding area.
RCMP Const. David Obirek said large facial images began appearing in the area last summer.
Police didn’t have a suspect, but Obirek said a tip came in recently that photos of the graffiti were posted on a page on the social networking site Facebook.
“Taggers tend to have a style, a stamp, that identifies them apart from anybody else,” Obirek said.
Investigators used the information from the tip identify a St. Clements man as a suspect.
When officers confronted the young man, Obirek said, he admitted to defacing public and private property with the images when he was under the age of 18 years.
Instead of charging the man, he was referred to the Selkirk justice committee, which deals with young offenders considered to be a low risk to re-offend, Obirek said.
